Nothing OS 5.0 is finally here. The company announced it on August 25, 2026, and the stable build has already begun reaching phones. It runs on Android 17, and it’s a much bigger change than the usual yearly bump.
So what changed, is your phone on the list, and when does it show up? Those are the questions people keep asking, so that’s what I’ll answer here. There’s also a short bit on the beta at the end, if waiting isn’t your thing.
What Is Nothing OS 5.0?
Think of it as the next major version of the software on Nothing and CMF phones. Google’s Android 17 sits underneath, and Nothing’s own design and features sit on top. The company says it adds more than 80 changes across the interface, widgets, personalisation, touch response, performance and AI.
Nothing showed it off in a YouTube livestream where Carl Pei, the CEO, and a few other executives went through the highlights. More details followed on the community forum.
Nothing OS 5.0 Release Date
The Open Beta began on August 26, 2026, a day after the announcement, for the Nothing Phone (3) at 3:30 PM IST. The first stable release reached Phone (3) owners on October 12, 2026. Nothing expects every eligible phone to have it by January 2027.
What’s New in Nothing OS 5.0
Start with the look, because it’s the first thing you’ll notice. Nothing kept its black-and-white style, which is the whole personality of these phones, but cleaned up nearly everything around it. Its Geist typeface now runs across the system. Settings, Camera and Gallery have new icons, the status bar is tidier, and system apps follow the same spacing and animations. The phone feels more like one product now.
There’s also a new option for colour. Nothing OS has been strictly monochrome for years. Now icons and widgets can pull soft tints from your wallpaper and change when you swap it. You don’t have to use it. The classic monochrome look is still there.
Widgets get a lot of attention too. Nothing added many new ones, plus a home screen theme with transparent widgets and a search bar with a little more depth. One reviewer did point out that Nothing OS still lacks a system-wide blur, which some rival Android skins have, so the transparency can look uneven in spots. It’s a small gripe.
If your phone has Glyph lighting, you’ll like this next one: there’s finally a dedicated Glyph Interface app. The controls used to be spread across Settings, and now they’re all together.
Performance is the part I can’t judge for you, since it depends on the phone and how you use it. Nothing says it worked on app launches, scrolling, touch response, multitasking, memory management and how long background apps stay alive. A focus on responsiveness is the right call, in my view.
Then there’s the AI side, which centres on Essential Space. Essential Voice transcriptions are cleaner, Smart Collections organise what you save, and the update adds Model Context Protocol (MCP) support. The most interesting addition is Essential Apps: you can build small apps on the phone itself and pin them as widgets. We’ll see if people use it. At least it’s a more imaginative idea than another AI button.
Plenty of the nicest changes are tiny. Bluetooth devices connect with one tap from Quick Settings. QR scanning is faster, and the result stays on the screen. Gallery can be sorted by Recently added or Captured date, and Camera, Gallery and Settings have updated controls and smoother motion. Since it’s all based on Android 17, you also get the platform upgrades that come with it.
Nothing OS 5.0 Eligible Phones
Ten phones are on the list: the Nothing Phone (3), Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (4b), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (3a), Phone (3a) Lite, Phone (2a), Phone (2a) Plus and the CMF Phone 2 Pro.
Sorry if you own a Nothing Phone (1), Phone (2) or CMF Phone 1. They’ve reached the end of major software support, so they won’t get it.

Nothing calls these timelines indicative, and updates arrive in batches. A friend with the same phone might get it before you. Region and carrier both play a part.
How to Install the Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta
You need a phone with beta access. Update to the latest Nothing OS 4.1 build first, then open Settings > System > Nothing Beta Hub and join the Open Beta there.
Back up your data before you do. It’s beta software, so bugs are likely. You can roll back to the Android 16-based Nothing OS 4.1, but that wipes the phone completely. If it’s your daily phone, wait for the stable release.
Is Nothing OS 5.0 Worth Updating To?
For most people, yes. The new look gets the headlines, but the day-to-day stuff is what you’ll actually use: one Glyph app, wallpaper-adaptive colours, a smoother feel and some useful Essential AI tools. The downsides are small. Transparency isn’t fully consistent, and Phone (1) and Phone (2) owners are left out. If your phone is supported, I wouldn’t skip it once the stable build arrives.
Final Thoughts on Nothing OS 5.0
Nothing OS 5.0 shows where the company is going: a cleaner design, more ways to make the phone yours, and AI that tries to be useful. Android 17 powers it, and the stable rollout is already live on the Phone (3). The rest of the range should follow over the coming months.
Until your phone’s turn comes, check Settings > System > System update from time to time, and keep it on the latest build. For more phone software news, browse the Technology category on our site.
