Norway vs Portugal: Ramos Punishes a Costly Blunder as Portugal Win in Oslo

Some football matches are neat and quiet. Norway vs Portugal on Sunday night was not one of them.

By the end, we had a beautiful team goal, a quick equaliser from Erling Haaland, a goalkeeper’s pass that will haunt him for a while, Cristiano Ronaldo watching from the bench, and Martin Ødegaard limping off after a late tackle. Portugal won 2-1 at the Ullevaal Stadium in the UEFA Nations League, and they earned every bit of the noise around this game.

    Let’s go through what happened.

Norway vs Portugal: The Quick Facts

The match was played on September 27, 2026, in Oslo. It was the second matchday of League A, Group A4. Portugal came in as the defending Nations League champions with Jorge Jesus in charge. Norway, led by Ståle Solbakken, had won their opening game 3-2 against Denmark.

The final score was Norway 1, Portugal 2. João Félix scored in the 17th minute, Haaland equalised in the 51st, and Gonçalo Ramos got the winner in the 54th.

The First Half: Portugal Score, Norway Push

Norway had more of the ball early on, and honestly, they looked like the better side for long spells. But football doesn’t always reward the team that plays better. Sometimes it rewards the team that takes its chance.

Portugal took theirs in the 17th minute. It was a lovely move. Nuno Mendes found Pedro Neto, and Neto slipped the ball to João Félix near the edge of the box. Félix didn’t overthink it. He stroked it into the bottom corner, and Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland had no chance.

Norway didn’t fall apart, though. Haaland had a couple of good moments before the break. One of his efforts was blocked by Rúben Dias after Diogo Costa spilled a shot, and Costa later saved a header from him. It was a busy half for the Portugal defence. They went into the break 1-0 up, but it felt like the game was far from settled.

The Second Half: Haaland Hits Back, Then Everything Changes

You could feel Norway come out with a different energy after the break. Just after the restart, Ødegaard took a free kick, and it was parried. Patrick Berg headed the ball across the goal, and Haaland was standing right where a striker should be. He tapped it in from close range in the 51st minute.

1-1. The stadium went loud, and for a few minutes it looked like Norway had everything going their way.

Then came the moment that decided the match.

Three minutes later, Nyland took a goal kick and played a pass straight into the path of Gonçalo Ramos. It was a terrible mistake. Ramos didn’t need a second invitation. He moved forward, waited for the keeper to commit, and chipped the ball calmly over him.

2-1 to Portugal. Just like that, all the momentum Norway had built was gone.

Credit to Norway, they didn’t give up. They controlled the last fifteen minutes or so, and Andreas Schjelderup forced Costa into a save. But Portugal’s defence stayed strong, and the second equaliser never came.

    Ronaldo on the Bench

Of course, a lot of the talk around this match was about a player who didn’t play at all.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s 41-year-old captain, stayed on the bench for the whole 90 minutes. Fans noticed straight away, and social media was full of questions before the match was even over.

Jorge Jesus had an answer, though, and it was a fairly simple one. Ronaldo had played almost 70 minutes in Portugal’s previous game against Wales, and Jesus felt he couldn’t start two matches in a row. Ramos got the nod instead.

It’s hard to argue with the result. Ramos scored the winner, Félix scored the opener, and Portugal won an away game against a strong Norway side with Haaland in the team. That doesn’t mean Ronaldo’s role is over, not at all. But it does show that this Portugal team can win big matches without building everything around him from the first whistle. It’s only two games, so let’s not draw too many conclusions just yet. Still, the question of when and how Ronaldo plays will follow this team for the rest of the campaign.

The Ødegaard and Bernardo Silva Row

If you thought the drama ended with the goals, think again.

In stoppage time, Bernardo Silva, who had come on as a substitute, made a late challenge on Norway captain Martin Ødegaard near the edge of the Norway box. The ball was already gone, and the tackle came well after it. The two players kept confronting each other for the rest of the game.

Ødegaard was furious afterwards, and he didn’t hide it. He said the tackle didn’t belong on a football pitch and that Silva just kicked him long after the ball had gone. He also said Silva didn’t apologise. Patrick Berg agreed with his captain and called it a deliberate kick that was completely unnecessary.

Silva’s answer was short and blunt. Basically, that’s football.

Ødegaard was seen limping as he left the stadium, and he skipped the usual mixed zone. He said he took a knock to the ankle and hoped it would be fine in a few days. Reports say it doesn’t look too serious, but Norway will be watching him closely, because their next game is on Thursday against Wales.

Whatever you think of the tackle, it was a bad way for the match to end for Norway. They lost the game, and they might have lost their captain for a bit too.

    Who Stood Out

Here are the players who caught my eye in this one.

    João Félix

scored again for Portugal, and his goal was the kind of finish that makes it look easy. He’s been a big part of Jesus’s early games in charge.

    Gonçalo Ramos

got the biggest chance of the night, and he took it. The chip was cool and clean. He replaced Ronaldo in the starting line-up and answered the coach’s decision in the best possible way.

    Rúben Dias and Diogo Costa

did a lot of the hard work at the back. Dias kept blocking and chasing Haaland, and Costa made important saves when Portugal needed them.

    Erling Haaland

scored, and he was a constant danger. It’s a little unfair to say he had a bad night, because he didn’t. He just didn’t get much help from the mistake that followed his goal.

    Ødegaard and Berg

were both important for Norway. Ødegaard’s free kick led to the equaliser, and Berg’s header created the goal itself.

    Ørjan Nyland

will want to forget this one. One bad pass overshadowed an otherwise fair effort from him and his team.

What This Means for Group A4

Portugal now have six points from two matches and sit top of the group. As defending champions, that’s exactly the start they wanted, and they did it away from home against a dangerous team.

Norway have three points, level with Denmark. It’s not a disaster, and the group is still very much open. But they’ll know they let a good chance slip. They created enough to get something from this game, and a single mistake cost them.

There’s still a return match between the two sides later in the campaign, and it could easily decide who wins the group. After a game like this one, nobody will want to miss it.

What I Took From This Match

A few things stood out to me.

First, football is cruel. Norway played well enough to win, or at least draw, and they still lost because of one pass.

Second, Portugal know how to win ugly. They didn’t have the most of the ball, but they scored from their moments and defended hard when they had to. That’s what champions do.

Third, Jorge Jesus made a brave call with Ronaldo, and it worked. That won’t always be the case, but tonight it was.

And finally, the Ødegaard tackle will keep the headlines alive for a couple of days. It’ll be interesting to see how he is by Thursday.
